Hispanic Heritage Month

American colleges and universities will be celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. Numerous activities ranging from concerts, cooking festivals, musicals, symposiums are being planned to celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of people of Latin American descent. ( Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America)

This celebration started as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson and expanded to a 30-day celebrating in 1988 under President Ronald Reagan.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

Prime Heritage, a leading retailer of multicultural graduation products will spotlight on this blog famous Hispanics who have made significant contributions to the American way of life during this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.

Week #1 Winner Announced - Another Contest Next Week!

Congratulations to Alicia M. Caroll of Harrisonburg, Virgina for winning this week's FREE Custom Kente stole!

Below is her 5 sentence essay on the signifcance and value of wearing a custom kente stole on graduation day.

Wearing a Kente Stole has significance and value to me because I'll be wearing it during one of the most important moments in my life. Graduating from college is a scary but exciting all at the same time. However, just as the cloth has been carefully handled, planned and woven to make something beautiful, I know that God has done, is doing and will continue to do the same with my life.

Congratulations Alicia !!!
